Mondays Don’t Have to Suck

“Every other day of the week is fine, yeah / But whenever Monday comes you can find me cryin’ all of the time,” sing The Mamas and the Papas. Poor Monday. Everyone seems to dread them; many profess to outright them. So many people are living for the weekend and Mondays mean the fun is over and it’s back to the grind.  But it doesn’t have to be this way. If you hate Mondays, here are some tips to help change that.

First of all, figure out why you hate Mondays if you really do. It’s almost a requirement in our society to hate Mondays, but that doesn’t mean you have to. Just because everyone else is miserable doesn’t mean you have to be too. Dare to be different. There are far worse things in life  than Mondays. Like stepping into water while wearing socks for instance. This happens to me frequently at my house and I hate it!

Preparing for Monday morning ahead of time can help ease the transition from weekend play mode into weekday work mode. Lay out your favorite outfit Sunday night so you don’t have to spend time in the morning making fashion decisions. Pick Monday to wear your favorite clothes because everyone feels better when they are looking their best. Get a good night’s sleep and eat a healthy breakfast also. I don’t know about you but if I don’t get a full night’s sleep I’m as cranky as a 3 year-old who doesn’t want to leave Chuck E. Cheese.

Remember to have an attitude of gratitude. If you hate Mondays because it’s back to work or school, try to change your perspective by being grateful that you have a job. Lots of people would love to have a job to complain about. If it’s because you have to go back to school, be grateful for the education you’re getting and the positive impact that will have on your future.

Mondays can be a fresh start, and who doesn’t love those? Take a moment to decide what you want to accomplish for the week and focus on reaching these goals. Appreciate the opportunities a new week presents. Do you want to be more productive at work? Do you want to get along better with your co-workers? Decide how you want to spend your energy for the week, and then keep your focus on that.

Do something nice for someone. Doing nice things for other people is a great way to feel better, even on a Monday. And mean people suck, that’s why nobody likes them.

Just pretend you like Mondays until you really do. Happiness is a choice. That’s right, you can just choose to be happy. Many people don’t realize this, and that’s a shame because being miserable for no reason is a huge waste of time.

So are you one of those people who hate Mondays?

  1. I’m with Garfield when it comes to Mondays! I do try to have my “to do” list ready so I can knock things out on Monday. If not, I drag the day away.

  2. I start a new diet every monday…does that count? lol I do think of mondays as a new start of the week…I am a stay at home mom so I don’t dread mondays as much as I use to when I was working.

  3. I don’t really mind Mondays. I’m a stay-at-home wife, and my husband works from home ~ so really not much different than any other day 🙂

    • That’s just it Chantale! Happiness is a choice. Of course we can’t be happy every single moment of our lives but that would be boring anyway. Mondays are inevitable, might as well make the best of them 🙂

  4. I do. I hate Monday because it is right in the middle of my “sleeping in” days. I get to sleep in on the weekends because the kids don’t have school, but Monday, hubby works and the kids have to be up at 630am to go to school. Tuesday and Wednesday hubby are off so I can sleep in a little later before getting ready for work! Mondays just ruin my sleep! 🙂

  5. I’ve actually always loved Mondays. I treat them as a easing back in process instead of a balls-to-the-wall grind. It’s kind of nice really.

    • According to those who have actually done research on this, some of the Monday angst is simply the change from the weekend. Even after just two days, sleeping late and staying up late can become routine and it’s hard to switch back. Taking it easy on Monday at work helps ease the transition.

  6. I’m one of the rare few who look forward to Mondays. It’s the day that everyone gets back on track after a busy weekend, which means that I finally get a minute to relax.

  7. I don’t hate Mondays, but since DH is a preacher and Sunday is our busiest, longest day, Monday is like our “day off.” Great ideas for days you are dreading though!

  8. It depends. For the most part, I don’t mind Mondays. Sometimes, if I have too much fun on the weekends and don’t prepare for Mondays, then I don’t like them so much.
